The commemorative sculptural ensemble by Constantin Brancusi in Târgu-Jiu is recognized worldwide as a seminal work of modern sculpture, and is Brancusi's only realized public sculpture. The sequence comprises the Table of Silence, a sequence of Stools, the Gate of the Kiss and the Endless Column. The Ensemble is interesting urbanistically in that Brancusi placed the works along an axis stretching from the floodplain of the River Jiu, where the Table of Silence is located, to higher ground one mile distant where he situated the Column.
Emotive, the lighting is careful and spare. Soft pools of light intimately reveal the Table ensemble, whereas a fleeing line of light emphasizes the endlessness of the Column which blends into the night sky. Tree-mounted uplights and downlights dramatically highlight the ceremonious axis.
