The Highline Competition Project
Client: Friends of the Highline
Lighting Design Consultants: Hervé Descottes, Principal, l’Observatoire International, and Nathalie Rozot, Design Consutant and Project Director (winning concept)
The Highline is an abandoned elevated freight rail line along the Hudson River, and spans from Gansevort Street to 34th Street. To create a safe nocturnal environment with an unobstrusive lighting design strategy, a low-level linear lighting system is consistently integrated in the site amenities (guardrails, benches). The lighting softly highlights the pathways and the plant beds above which the users can discover New York's nightscape.
Developed during the design competition, this award-winning lighting concept was applied by l'Observatoire's team to Field Operations and Diller, Scofidio+ Renfro's winning competition entry. It was developed for the first phase of the Highline which opened to the public in 2009.
