Miami International Airport: South Terminal Extension
Client: Dade County Aviation, Department of Aviation
Architects: Borrelli & Associates, Mateu Carreño Joint Venture
Electrical Engineers: TLC
Special Lighting Consultants: l’Observatoire International Inc. Project Director: Nathalie Rozot
The new South Terminal represents a 1 million square feet expansion which houses a variety of functions (ticketing areas, airline offices, retail and food services, security checkpoints, baggage claims, Federal inspection services and in transit lounges, outdoor bus terminal etc. to accommodate both domestic and international travelers (total budget: $400 million).
The lighting design enhances the architectural spaces, and balances light levels with spaces bathed in daylight. At night, the lighting features acquire new dramatic contrasts while maintaining adequate light levels, and saturated colors create a strong visual identity reminiscent of Miami’s colorful culture. The lighting sources all use long- life lamps, and luminaires were selected to consolidate lamp types and simplify the owner’s maintenance schedule.
